Licorice root is incorporated into
about a third of all Chinese herbal formulas. This is an
indication that it has tremendous versatility. Licorice supports
the effects of most all herbs. Perhaps, this is the main reason
the Chinese call it the "Great adjunct". Licorice not
only contains hormonal precursors but stimulates the production of
estrogen. This has been shown to decrease the symptoms associated
with hormone fluctuation, licorice is a demulcent and also has
mild laxative properties. Licorice root has received official
recognition in Britain. Belgium, France, and Germany. In many
countries it is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and
anti-spasmodic properties.
