- Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)
(Root)
- Valerian has been used
successfully for many conditions believed to have a nervous or
anxious component, especially when associated with an element of
muscle spasm, since it does not have antispasmodic qualities.
- It is very useful for tension
headaches caused by anxiety or tension. This herb is also a valued
tranquilizer. Unlike most prescribed tranquilizers, it has no
addictive effect with alcohol and no addictive potential. It can
be considered a non-sedating tranquilizer. Thus while promoting a
calm and relaxed mood, valerian will not negatively affect level
of arousal or alertness.
- Valerian is also highly regarded
as a mild sleep aid, and its effectiveness has been proven in
clinical studies.
- Valerian is particularly useful in
treatment of behavioral and learning problems in childhood.
