URIC ACID

An organic acid that contains nitrogen and is the end-product of the metabolism of protein.  It occurs in the urine but in small amounts.  It is formed in the liver and excreted by the kidneys but in excess, salts (urates) form and occur as stone in the urinary tract.  Deposits of urates in joints is a feature of gout.
